Clarksville

Serving as one of Austin's most desirable central neighborhoods.

Welcome to Clarksville

Historical Overview

Clarksville stands as one of Austin's most historically significant neighborhoods. Founded in 1871 by freedman Charles Clark, it was one of the earliest freedmen's communities established west of the Mississippi River after the Civil War. Originally separated from Austin proper by difficult terrain, Clarksville developed as a close-knit African American community with its own distinct identity, churches, and businesses.

Throughout the 20th century, the neighborhood faced challenges including segregation, infrastructure neglect, and later, gentrification pressures. In 1976, Clarksville was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural importance. Today, while much has changed demographically, Clarksville retains architectural elements from its past while serving as one of Austin's most desirable central neighborhoods.

Community efforts have preserved aspects of its history, including the Clarksville Community Development Corporation and the annual Clarksville Days celebration, which honors the area's unique heritage and founding families.
